The
headquarters is the hub of all activities and is situated at Taramani,
on land owned by the society.
Special
Education Centres

Taramani
A sprawling 18,000 square feet state-of-the-art building, houses
the Special Education Centre in Taramani. This has the departments
of Physiotherapy, Speech and Language, Music, Play, Special Education
classrooms, unit for Sensory Integration, Open Schooling classrooms,
Science and Computer labs, a unit for persons with multiple disabilities
and sensory problems and Hydro therapy. This building is barrier
free to enable easy access for persons with wheelchairs. SPASTN
is an accredited institution for the National Institute of Open
Schooling, both for the academic and for selected vocational courses.
Ayanavaram
This center is in a rental building in Central Chennai, close to
the city slums. The center has all the services needed for children
with Cerebral Palsy and is managed by the principal.
Royapuram
This center is right in the middle of the slums of North Chennai.
This again, is in a rental building, with two floors and is managed
by the principal. This too has all the services required for children
with Cerebral Palsy.
Able Art
Trains young adults with disabilities for job oriented vocations,
with a view to start their own sheltered workshop or for self employment,
or to prepare them for open employment.
Human
Resources Development
This department trains professionals in the rehabilitation field.
A key factor in the movement for greater Disability Management and
Rehabilitation is the development of trained personnel to serve
this cause. Regular training programmes and short term training
programmes are offered. The building opposite the special school
has a well equipped library for both the staff and student trainees.
The classes for regular training programmes are held here, and it
has a hostel for out station students.
Administration
Block
The Administrative Block housing the offices of the Director, her
support staff and the Accounts department are in the building to
the right of the school building. The Able Art vocational training
centre is situated above the Administrative office. Each vocational
area is colour coded with raised name boards for easy access to
low vision people. The premises of Able Art was planned and constructed
barrier-free, making it completely accessible for people with multiple
disabilities.
Vocational
Training Centre, Taramani
This is a large hall where students with disabilities are trained
in vocations suited to their individual and collective abilities
which includes skilled training and functional academics.
Workshop
The ground floor houses the core workshop, where special need based
furniture are fabricated for all the three centers and for the CBR
programmes.
The Orthotics unit functions from the first floor, where calipers
and other special aids and equipments, necessary for the mobility
and functioning of persons with disability are fabricated.
Family Service Centre
Children
with disability and their families who come from out station, find
this accommodation cost effective and also 'reach effective' - as
it is within the campus.
Training Hall, (Gym)
The gym is a large hall which is now used for short training programmes
and for yoga practice.
Open
Air Auditorium
All big events are conducted here in addition to the daily prayer
and yoga for children of the special school, in the open under a
canopy of trees.
