About Us - Organization Focus

SPASTN strives to empower and enable disabled people to reach their full potential through Education, Training and Employment.
SPASTN's intervention in this direction begins with awareness creation in remote villages, goes on to the screening of newborn babies in Primary Health Centres and Government Hospitals and to the offering of a wide range of options to parents of disabled children, from a Special school setting to Integration and Inclusive education systems.

SPASTN's uniqueness is the development of a Horizontal model of rehabilitation, which is a convergent model, in linking with the mainstream sectors including Health, Education, Rural Development, Integrated Child development Scheme (ICDS), Social Welfare and the Railways, thereby including persons with disabilities into the routine activities.

Another unique feature of SPASTN is its successful attempt to include parents, family members and disabled persons themselves as stakeholders in the organization. SPASTN's Community Based Rehabilitation programmes and Institute Based Rehabilitation programmes, encourages the formation of independent Self Help Groups/ Sangams and Parents Associations.

SPASTN is committed to HRD in a big way and works in the training of Special Educators, Therapists, Government Personnel, Parents and Volunteers. SPASTN has also contributed to Low Cost Technology for the development of mobility and adaptive devices for persons with disabilities.

The rights of the disabled are effectively communicated to the rural populace through Puppet Shows, Street Plays and Villupattu, which is the singing of popular folk tunes with disability issues as lyrics.

At the core of everything that SPASTN undertakes, is the passionate belief in the dignity of human life. It is for this, that SPASTN fights for the Rights of disabled persons, the right to life, to information, to education, to health, to employment, to social security, to recreation, and to full participation.
