- Vocational
Training Center
The
ultimate aim of SPASTN is the effective inclusion of disabled persons
in the working society. At SPASTN's Vocational Training Centre,
children with disabilities learn to make Paper Bags, Candles, Jute
Bags, Pen-refills, Handkerchiefs, Hand-towels, Leather Key-chains,
Phenol, Liquid Soap, and Decorative Flowers made from waste silk
cocoons, etc. The latest introduction in vocational training is
the ceramic unit and Horticulture.
Trainees
undergo Occupational therapy to sensitize them to the requirements
of manufacturing routines. They learn at their own pace and they
also learn to assist each other. In the afternoon teamwork is further
ingrained through a session of games. Vocational training not only
keeps them occupied but inculcates a sense of discipline and is
also therapeutic. They therefore learn to follow a regular routine
for all their activities including meal times, leisure times and
a time for rest. The centre has orders for the supply of products
manufactured at the Vocational Training Centre, on a regular basis.
Through
this Vocational Training Centre, SPASTN strives to include persons
with disabilities into regular vocational activity, gain employment
in sheltered workplaces or even engage in a trade, working from
home.
SPASTN
also has a Job-oriented Vocation Training called ABLE ART, which
is a job oriented training programme. It imparts training in Tailoring,
Food Production, Weaving, Printing, Desk Top Publishing and Office
Training. The premises of Able Art was planned and constructed barrier-free,
making it completely accessible for people with multiple disabilities.
Able Art is manned by trainers and special educators, who pre-determine
the set of competencies for each trade. Testing and evaluation,
using real-time tests, are carried out, often in the presence of
prospective employers.
Trainees
here also go on visits to industrial and other business establishments
to get sensitized to real workplace atmospheres. Employers are also
briefed and sensitized to the disabled employees and their requirements,
especially barrier free work areas. The DTP and Printing divisions
of ABLE ART are already processing respective orders. The Catering
division caters to all meals and snacks of SPASTN as well as additional
Party orders on special occasions.
